Frank Spaziani Must be in the Doghouse with the Wife

USC beat Boston college 24-13 to win the Emerald Bowl in a soggy affair in San Francisco on Saturday night. Once again Matt Barkley is getting most of the praise for the Trojans even though he didn’t play all that well. He did a so-so job getting the ball to Damian Williams and Stanley Havili who did their best to make him look great. With a better arm and more accuracy, Barkley would have had 450 yards 4 touchdowns and no picks. It also seemed that USC had the refs on their side when they got the better end of two game-changing plays, one on a sideline bomb to Williams, the other on a punt that hit a USC player and was recovered by BC. Still, the game went to the Trojans but the best line came from BC coach Frank Spaziani when he explained his reaction to hearing USC would be their opponent:

“The good news is we got the bowl bid. The bad news is we got the Trojans of Southern Cal. That’s like getting the news that your mother-in-law went off the cliff in your Escalade.”

Spaz is lucky his team was playing in San Francisco during Christmas week because I’m guessing his family isn’t going to like reading that quote. How do you explain that one to your wife? Making matters worse was that he’s not returning with a win. No question to me that they need better play and fewer turnovers from quarterback Dave Shinskie next season.
