Boston Herald Finally Apologizes to Pats

May 14, 2008 by Larry Brown • Comments

I firmly criticized the Boston Herald for the timing of their Patriots taping the Rams walk-through story the day before the Super Bowl and called their actions evil. After word from Commissioner Goodell came out saying no such tape existed, I rightfully called out the Herald for being full of horseish and said they should apologize. Well, only a matter of a few days later and they have come through with their apologies. And as much as I’d like to believe in the ubiquitous powers of LBS, I do have to admit that ESPN was putting the pressure on the Herald to apologize. So no doubt those guys are dancing over the Herald’s grave right now, doing backflips on our boy Tomase who wrote the story. Since some ESPN members probably are celebrating, I just want to make sure it works both ways and that ESPN properly apologizes on TV when they’re wrong. Fat chance, I know. Anyway, the Herald’s apology was OK, but the comments on the article were fantastico! Let me share a few of my favorites:

I am never reading the Herald for the rest of my life, and I hope the writer of that article, who everyone knows by now, is severely punished for this. To publish a false report, of this magnitude, the day before the Superbowl, is unforgivable.

responsible journalism? Give it a try sometimes!

The Herald screwed up. You must fire Tomase and the Editors ASAP. Boston Sports fans will not forget this.

There really are so many more great comments, you should check em out. And it’s true — the Herald really did sabotage the Patriots with that article. The timing, the amount of coverage it garnered, there’s no way it didn’t bother the team at least a little. That really is inexcusable and if I’m the Patriots I would revoke their credentials, refuse to talk to their writers, and sue their asses, not necessarily in that order. Oh, and every time people in the mainstream media bring up that issue of bloggers making stuff up and not being credible like newspapers? Just throw this example right in the face. At least when bloggers make mistakes it’s not in the second largest newspaper in a major city with direct impact on only the largest sporting event in the entire world. Yeah, but nothing big about that.

UPDATE: check out Tomase’s apology in the Herald.
