DeMeco Ryans sues NFL, Texans over 2014 Achilles’ tendon injury

NRG Stadium field

Former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker DeMeco Ryans, who is currently a free agent, filed a lawsuit against the NFL, Houston Texans, Harris County Convention Sports Corp. and SMG on Friday.

Pro Football Talk reports the lawsuit comes as the result of a torn Achilles tendon suffered by Ryans in a 31-21 victory over the Houston Texans on November 2, 2014.

Following that game, several Eagles players sounded off about the state of the field and the dangers it posed.

“Yeah, that field is terrible, bad, bad,” McCoy told “PFT Live” at the time.

“There’s so many holes, potholes in it, rocky. It’s like they measured the squares out and put them in piece by piece. There’s so many holes, it’s like this can’t be a real NFL field. The stadium’s actually nice, but the field is so bad.”

The Texans opted to switch surfaces after only a single home game in 2015, but for players who had already suffered an injury on the grass-based field system, it was too little too late.

Previously, former Texans punter Brett Hartmann sued both Harris County Convention Sports Corp. and SMG, who are the stadium-management company in charge of NRG Stadium, for what he called a “career-ending injury.”

Both the Texans and the NFL will likely argue that Ryans can seek relief under the league’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
