Earl Thomas did not like ‘Legion of Boom’ nickname at first
The “Legion of Boom” is a great nickname for the Seattle Seahawks’ ferocious defense, but the members of it did not always feel that way.
In a sit-down interview with Tony Dungy that aired in NBC’s pre-Super Bowl show, Earl Thomas said he did not care for the nickname at first.
“I didn’t like it at first. It was like we were all getting caught up in our own things,” Thomas said of the L.O.B.
But Thomas says the name has complete grown on him.
“I love it now,” he says.
Kam Chancellor is credited with coining the phrase. In a radio interview, Chancellor was asked what he was doing over the offseason. Chancellor said he was trying to keep the “boom.”
“That was one of the names that he came up with, and it kind of stuck,” Richard Sherman recalls.
Though the players are part of an entire team in Seattle, the “Legion of Boom” is like its own team within the team. The members of it have a ton of pride because they feel it takes a special person to be a part of it. You have to have the right attitude, work ethic and style of play to make it with the “Legion of Boom.”
The core members of the L.O.B. are Sherman, Thomas, Chancellor and Byron Maxwell. Brandon Browner was a past member, while Jeremy Lane is considered a current member.
