Joe Philbin fired by Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins have fired head coach Joe Philbin.
Philbin, who had the Dolphins off to a 1-3 start this season and will finish his Miami career with a 24-28 record in three-plus seasons, met with team owner Stephen Ross on Monday. It was previously reported that defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle was more likely to be fired, but Ross decided to replace the man in charge.
“This was a tough decision for me to make knowing how tirelessly Joe worked in his four years here to make this a winning team,” Ross said in a statement via the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “He is a man of the highest character and integrity that I developed a close personal relationship with. I am extremely disappointed with how we have started the season, but I feel confident that we can improve quickly with the talent we have on our roster. We will soon be announcing an interim coach to lead the team going forward.”
The Dolphins entered the season with high hopes but have been a disaster thus far. It’s unclear if Coyle will end up getting fired in the near future, as Dolphins players are supposedly frustrated with his scheme. Ndamukong Suh reportedly pulled a childish move in practice recently to let his feelings be known.
Tight ends coach Dan Campbell will be named interim head coach. The Dolphins will have a chance to start trying to straighten things out during their Week 5 bye.
