Michael Vick: Eagles can be a dynasty like the Cowboys and Niners of the 1990s

The people of Philadelphia are starved for a Super Bowl. The Eagles have not won an NFL championship in the Super Bowl era, which began in 1967. Donovan McNabb led them to the NFC Championship Game several times (and beyond it once), but Eagles fans who are under the age of 52 have never seen their team win a championship. Michael Vick thinks that could all change in the near future. Not only that, but he thinks it could change in the form of multiple Super Bowl trophies.

“When I look at our football team and what we have on paper, I think about when I was growing up and the great San Francisco 49er teams, the great Green Bay Packer teams, and the great Dallas Cowboy teams, how they just positioned themselves to compete and be one of the best teams out there, Vick said according to CSNPhilly.com. “I think we have a chance to be that. I think we have a chance to develop a dynasty.”

At least he left the Steelers out. Vick is referring to the Niners teams that won three Super Bowls from 1988 to 1994, the Cowboys teams that won three from 1992 to 1995, and the Packers who won an NFC championship in 1995 and then the Super Bowl in 1996. Talk about setting the bar high. Vick did, however, acknowledge that getting to the postseason is the first priority for a team that hasn’t won a playoff game since 2008.

“I think just getting to the postseason right now is our focus,” he said. “The Super Bowl is going to come if it’s meant to happen. Some of the best teams have some of the best luck. Maybe we’ll have some of that. I think our focus needs to be one game at a time, just getting into the postseason.”

The Eagles would not have signed Vick to a six-year, $100 million contract if they didn’t think he could lead them to at least one championship. That being said, you always need to be careful when throwing the word “dynasty” around. Teams are careful about using it when they’ve won their second Super Bowl, let alone ones that have never done it.
