Mike Martz: ‘Ridiculous’ that Terrell Owens is Hall of Fame finalist ahead of Bruce, Holt
Former Rams coach Mike Martz seems to have some issues with Terrell Owens and his Hall of Fame candidacy.
Martz called it “ridiculous” that Owens is a Football Hall of Fame finalist while former Rams receivers Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt, who were integral parts of Martz’s “Greatest Show on Turf,” are not.
“‘Surprised’ isn’t the word,” Martz told Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “You can’t print how I felt when T.O. leapfrogged those two. That’s just plain out-and-out ridiculous.”
Martz believes that Bruce and Holt didn’t really like to draw attention to themselves, which hurt their cause.
“Had they promoted themselves, which was contrary to everything we were about, they’d probably get in without an issue,” Martz said. “Had they pulled a T.O., they probably get in without an issue. That’s just not who we were.
“If they big-timed it and did all that dumb stuff, they’d probably get in earlier. I think they’ll eventually get in. I don’t think that’s an issue, but it’s tragic that people think of them like that. If Marvin Harrison gets in, how could they not get in?”
Owens has more career receiving yards and touchdowns than both Bruce and Holt. Harrison has more touchdowns as well. Bruce and Holt may well get their due eventually, but there’s no disputing why Owens will get in before them – though can we get some special recognition for Holt’s career and the punishment he took during it?
