Report: Mike McCarthy could depart Packers depending on GM hire
The Green Bay Packers have already made several changes to their coaching staff, but the biggest may be yet to come.
Packers reported Bob McGinn reported Friday that Russ Ball, the team’s vice president of football administration, is likely to be named the next general manager. That, however, could mean the end of Mike McCarthy’s tenure as the team’s head coach.

According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, there is an understanding that Ball and McCarthy have a rather poor relationship, and one or both sides may want to move on, which could see McCarthy leave the organization. The coach alluded to this on Thursday.
“It has to fit,” McCarthy said. “I have the best job in pro football, and no disrespect to the other 31 clubs. I love it here, I want to be here, but it has to fit for me, too. I’ve done this job long enough, I wouldn’t want the G.M. to hire me or partner with me if we don’t fit together. Because you’re on a path for, in the short term and long term, it’s going to be a lot more difficult to get to where you’re going to go. It has to be a partnership.”
The Packers have already made significant changes to their coaching staff this offseason. McCarthy’s departure, if it happens, would certainly shake the organization.
