Tim Tebow could reportedly request a trade if he’s still a backup in 2013

On the surface, Tim Tebow exemplifies what it means to put the team ahead of yourself. He tells reporters that he is willing to do anything his coaches ask of him and contribute to winning in any way possible. If that means holding a clipboard, Tebow says he is willing to do that. But we all know he is the ultimate competitor, and competitors want to play.

According to Gary Myers of the NY Daily News, Tebow could seek a trade in 2013 to give himself an opportunity to become a starting quarterback.

“I think he will be a good soldier,” an NFL source reportedly told Myers Wednesday. “At the end of the year, I think he will express those concerns to the Jets. He will want to move on. The one thing about Tebow is he is the quintessential team player. He would never do anything that is going to undermine the team. But he’s football-aholic. It’s in his blood.”

The Broncos basically gave Tebow a choice of where he wanted to be traded when they decided to part ways with him. When he chose New York, there was reason to believe he did so because he thought he had an opportunity to take the starting quarterback job away from Mark Sanchez. While the 2012 Jets have only played one game against a weak opponent, Sanchez has already shown signs of improvement and looks like he could be up to the challenge of outplaying another quality quarterback. If he continues to play the way he did in Week 1, there will be very little opportunity for Tebow.

As Shutdown corner mentioned, Tebow and his contract that runs through 2014 could be difficult to move next season — especially if he hardly plays this year. He will still be owed roughly $3.5 million next season, which will be a lot for a guy who was able to prove very little in 2012 if Sanchez plays at a high level. Tebow took a risk in choosing to join the Jets over the Jaguars, and he could end up stuck with it for at least a couple of seasons if Sanchez has his way.
