Zay Flowers is a bit heftier these days but apparently for good reason.
The Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Flowers spoke with reporters at training camp on Wednesday. During the media session, Flowers revealed that he gained weight over the offseason, adding eight pounds in total.
Flowers also offered an explanation for the added bulk. “Run through more tackles,” Flowers said, per Jamison Hensley of ESPN.
The 25-year-old Flowers was officially listed last season at 5-foot-9 and 183 pounds. It appears that Flowers slimmed down a bit over the course of the year as he also revealed to reporters on Wednesday that he now sits at 186 pounds following his weight gain.
Flowers is already regarded as a bit undersized, especially as a Z receiver rather than a slot receiver. But he still did extremely well for himself last season, leading the Ravens with 86 catches for 1,211 yards and five touchdowns.
A bit of added bulk can only help Flowers’ cause these days, especially with Baltimore just rewarding him with a new four-year, $140 million extension (the largest deal for a WR in franchise history). It may also help for Flowers that the Ravens are no longer being led by John Harbaugh, whom Flowers had expressed some frustrations with.
