Matt Leinart Sounds Off About Benching

Derek Anderson is going to start at quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals in the all-important third preseason game on Saturday night against the Chicago Bears.  From a fan’s standpoint, the NFL preseason is meaningless.  For a player, there are certain moments that are crucial.  The third preseason game is one of those moments, as it represents the game that is most closely treated like a regular season game where the projected starters get the most playing time.

If you start the third preseason game, there’s a good chance the position you start at is yours to lose.  With that in mind, it’s understandable that Matt Leinart is frustrated he has been benched.  To the outside viewer, it’s hardly a surprise.  We knew the Cardinals weren’t comfortable with their quarterback situation when they brought Anderson in this past off-season and explored adding Marc Bulger.  I don’t know if it’s the former Heisman winner’s absence of effort or his attitude, but the Cardinals have never seemed enthusiastic about him as the starter.  Based on his recent comments to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a combination of the two.

I’m disappointed. I’ve done everything to this point that they’ve asked me to and more. I’ve worked hard and been a leader. I’m trying to be that guy in this new role. I have high expectations for myself.”

“I feel I’ve been efficient. I’ve been accurate. I haven’t turned the ball over. I don’t know how we judge performance when you have 13 pass attempts to the other guy’s 40. I’m not going to sit here and complain and point the finger. I have to get better and I’m going to get better.”

The only problem with his logic is that talking about how you haven’t gotten enough snaps and essentially whining about not being given a chance can easily be construed as complaining.  At this point we have no idea who the starter will be come the first game of the regular season.  I wouldn’t be surprised if it were Leinart.  I also wouldn’t be surprised if he were no longer on the Cardinals roster.

Matt Leinart and The Bachelorette?

It’s been a relatively quiet off-season for Matt Leinart and that’s a good thing lest he become the answer to another Jeopardy question. While things in Arizona have centered around how well the former Heisman will be able to replace the recently retired Kurt Warner, Leinart’s name managed to sneak into the gossip rags everywhere else. According to Star Magazine, Leinart was spotted spitting game to The Bachelorette, Ali Fedotowsky:

When Ali and Matt met on July 15 at a charity event, sparks flew — especially after they had time to talk by themselves. By the end of the night, the jock scored Ali’s digits.

“Matt finally asked for Ali’s phone number and she happily gave it to him,” an eyewitness tells Star. “He promised that he’d call her

Hopefully Matty acted quickly knowing that training camp was coming up. Much like the way Chad Ochocinco’s close relationship with dance partner Cheryl Burke ruined his dating show, this news is screwing up the final episode of The Bachelorette where Ali is supposed to choose her suitor. Maybe in a few months we’ll see Fedotowsky holding it down in a luxury box at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale cheering on her new man.

Cardinals Don’t Seem Comfortable With Quarterback Situation

As we inch closer and closer to training camp and NFL rosters start shaping up, we get a better sense of teams’ needs — or at least their perceptions of their needs.  At this point in the off-season, it would appear the Arizona Cardinals aren’t exactly feeling confident with the quarterbacks they currently have on their depth chart.  Matt Leinart’s motivation is questionable, and he was terrible in place of Kurt Warner last season with no touchdown passes and three interceptions to go along with an embarrassing passer rating of 64.6.  Leinart has never thrown more touchdowns than interceptions in a season with the Cardinals, and his passer rating has never exceeded 80.2, which he finished with in 2008 after only playing in four games.  Whether or not he’s ready to take the next step remains to be seen, but thus far the former Heisman winner has an unimpressive resume.  I highly doubt his attempt at MMA training is going to get him there.

Derek Anderson — who the Cardinals signed to a two-year free agent deal in March — has been a model of inconsistency throughout his young career.  He followed an impressive 2007 — in which he threw 29 touchdown passes — with passer ratings of 66.5 and 42.1 in 2008 and 2009.  If 2007 Derek Anderson were to show up, he’d almost certainly be the starter in Arizona.  The chances of that happening seem slim at this point, and if the season started today the Cardinals would seemingly be best off flipping a coin to decide on a starter.

Video: ‘Pretty Boy’ Matt Leinart MMA Training with FOX’s Jay Glazer

I first read about Matt Leinart doing MMA training with FOX NFL reporter and MMA announcer, Jay Glazer, last week at Pro Football Talk. I understood everything from Glazer’s angle — here he gets to assert himself as an alpha male and boss around a Heisman Trophy winner — that has to be a good ego boost. Plus, imagine all the breaking news stories he’ll get having Leinart in his back pocket. As for Matt, I still don’t get what the guy is doing. Spending his off-season doing MMA training shows me once again just how lost the guy is because he’s obviously more concerned with his image than his on-field play. Take a look at the training:

When I see this video I can’t help but think of Matt Leinart as a pledge in a fraternity just getting bossed and bitched around. I can almost feel the other guys in the video saying to themselves, “Check out what I’m going to make this NFL golden boy do. I ask him to fetch and he does.” I know Leinart’s trying to change his image, but rather than changing who he is maybe he should just be comfortable with what he is and just try to make the best of himself. I still don’t see how this will help him read defenses and target receivers and last time I checked, knees to the chest of the defender elicit 15-yard personal foul penalties.

Jeopardy Has Fun with Matt Leinart

I didn’t really feel it was necessary to post any pictures of Matt Leinart beer bonging hot chicks in a hot tub when they first came out. For one reason, I didn’t have any context for the photos; they could have been from five years ago for all I know. Besides, can’t really get mad at a guy for hanging out in a jacuzzi with a bunch of hot co-eds, right? But I do have to say, this photo from Jeopardy is hilarious.

Not sure I would really call this a clue, but it is pretty funny. And yes, it totally humanizes Leinart.

Brynn’s Digging for Matt Leinart’s Gold

First we had the news drop in earlier in the week that Matt Leinart was a deadbeat dad — if you can believe his former girlfriend and baby’s mother, Brynn Cameron. But then again, after hearing what this chick reportedly wants, she just might be out to make him look bad. Because this report is just insane. From the always reliable TMZ:

TMZ has learned that the NFL pretty boy is locked in a raging legal fight with his ex-girlfriend, Brynn Cameron, over the couple’s 9-month-old son Cole. According to sources close to the case, Brynn wants Matt to hand over more than $30,000 per month! That’s a ton of jack for a 21-year-old living with her parents! According to sources close to the case, Leinart’s pissed — having already bought her a car, as well as voluntarily giving her around six grand a month.

Sources tell TMZ that the former USC star already “comes back to L.A. once a week, every week, to see the baby,” but he wants a schedule where he can see the kid in Arizona as well. Unlike most pro athlete dads who have kids out of wedlock, we’re told Matt is an engaged father who wants to be in his son’s life.

Hey, I’ll be first to say that Leinart screwed up big time by letting one slip past the goalie, but $30,000/month is just highway robbery. Think about it. 30 grand a month? That’s 360,000 bucks a year just to be some kids mom. And she was in college eating top ramen and dorm food when they were dating; the argument that she grew accustomed to a lifestyle would be a joke. Like my buddy Andy says, if this chick is trying to make a comeback to the basketball courts, collegiate athletics shouldn’t allow it based on the type of income she’ll be pulling. This could be absolute robbery.

Matt Leinart … Menace to Society?

Matt Leinart … Menace to Society?

Alright, I’m not too concerned with Leinart slipping one past the goalie. That’s his business and his life … and his child support payments. Lots of em. And we already know he has a reputation for being a Hollywood guy, but has he taken the Hollywood mentality a bit too far? Quite possibly.

Via Fark, the Arizona Republic says Leinart’s car was caught by speed cameras four times for being over the speed limit (by at least 11mph). One of Leinart’s agents, Chuck Price, protected Leinart saying one of the tickets was his. Three of the instances were within a span of five days!

Sure, speed racer wasn’t too far over the speed limit, but he should know better, especially considering he could wind up with his license suspended because of repeat violations. No meetings to be reprimanded by Commish Goodell have been scheduled.
