Addison Russell suspended 40 games for violating domestic violence policy
Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell has been suspended 40 games for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy.
Commissioner Rob Manfred announced the suspension Wednesday. It is retroactive to Sept. 21, when Russell was placed on administrative leave, meaning he will miss roughly the first month of 2019.

MLB reopened the investigation into Russell when ex-wife Melisa Reidy posted an account of how the shortstop abused her physically and mentally. She also cooperated with investigators, leading to this outcome.
The suspension does not come as a surprise, and had been widely rumored since the league began investigating again. It is entirely possible that the Cubs will seek to move on from Russell this offseason, though it’s not clear if they’d see much interest.
