Houston Astros starting pitcher Jose Urquidy has yet to make his 2024 season debut as he deals with arm discomfort, and it sounds like that is the way it is going to stay.

Urquidy began the season on the injured list because of a right forearm strain. He had been working his way back from the injury when he was pulled from a Triple-A rehab start two weeks ago.

On Monday, ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez and Jeff Passan reported that Urquidy is scheduled to meet with a specialist and may need Tommy John surgery.

BREAKING: Astros starter Jose Urquidy, recently pulled off his rehab start, will soon see Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas and could be headed for a second Tommy John surgery, sources tell me and @JeffPassan.

Urquidy, 29, underwent Tommy John surgery when he was in the minors in 2017. He made his MLB debut with the Astros two years later, and he has been mostly effective when healthy. A right shoulder injury forced Urquidy to miss time last season, and he finished the year 3-3 with a 5.29 ERA in 16 appearances (10 starts).

The Astros are 26-34 and in third place in the AL West, so they could have used a boost to their starting rotation. It now seems unlikely that Urquidy will be able to provide one.
