One of the worst free agent contracts in Major League Baseball managed to get even worse on Wednesday.
Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon suffered a setback and will need hip surgery, according to Sam Blum of The Athletic. Rendon is expected to miss a significant period of time, and it is unclear when or if he will even play for the Angels again.

Since joining the Angels in 2020, Rendon has been better known for his injuries than for any of his play. He has played in just 205 games over a four-year span since the start of the 2021, and spent pretty much all of last season on the injured list with various problems.
Rendon’s other issue is that he has not been particularly effective when he has played. He has hit just .242 with 22 home runs in 257 games with the organization, a far cry from the MVP-level numbers he posted with Washington.
The Angels may have had an inkling that there were more issues coming with Rendon, as they essentially replaced him as a starter less than a week ago.
Rendon signed a seven-year, $245 million contract with the Angels prior to the 2020 season. He still has two years left on that contract, but at this point, the 34-year-old is a lost cause for the Angels.
