Blue Jays closer Jeff Hoffman had heartbreaking comment about blowing World Series

Jeff Hoffman blew the biggest save opportunity of his career on Saturday night, and the Toronto Blue Jays closer was clearly feeling the sting after the game.

The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Blue Jays 5-4 in Game 7 of the World Series at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario. The Blue Jays took a 4-3 lead into the ninth inning before Hoffman allowed a one-out solo home run to Miguel Rojas. That sent the game to extra innings, and Will Smith gave L.A. the lead with a solo homer off Shane Bieber in the top of the 11th.

Mookie Betts then sealed the win for the Dodgers by turning a double play himself in the bottom of the 11th.

Hoffman was asked after the game about the emotions he was experiencing. The right-hander had a heartbreaking comment.

“I cost everybody in here a World Series ring, so it’s pretty sh—y. I’ve just gotta execute better in that spot and not let that happen,” Hoffman said.

Hoffman was outstanding for the majority of the postseason before surrendering the untimely homer to Rojas. Hoffman posted a 1.46 ERA across 12 1/3 innings in the playoffs. He allowed a total of just two runs in four appearances.

The Blue Jays looked like they were destined to become champions when Bo Bichette blasted a three-run home run off Shohei Ohtani in the third inning, but the Dodgers proved once again why they can never be counted out.

Though Hoffman might feel responsible for the loss, Toronto had plenty of chances. The Dodgers simply made clutch plays when they needed them the most, which is why they are the first back-to-back World Series champions in more than two decades.
