Boomer Esiason expresses regret for his Jorge Lopez comments
New York sports radio host Boomer Esiason expressed regret on Thursday for the comments he initially made about Jorge Lopez.
Lopez was designated for assignment by the Mets after throwing his glove into the stands following an ejection from Wednesday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lopez said in postgame comments that he did not regret his actions. He also called himself probably the worst teammate in MLB in comments that were widely mistaken for him saying the Mets were the worst team in MLB.
Esiason, a former NFL quarterback who has since become a popular talk-show host, initially was critical of Lopez on his “Boomer and Gio” show on WFAN. But the host changed his tune after receiving a message from someone who shared some background about what Lopez is going through personally.
According to Esiason, Lopez is awaiting a transplant for his son, who is apparently ill.
“I want to offer an apology to Jorge Lopez for what I said this morning about how Carlos Mendoza should have handled it,” Esiason said. “There is something serious going on in this young man’s life.”

Esiason could personally relate to Lopez’s situation since Esiason once had to play a season while distracted about potential health issues with his son, Gunnar, who has cystic fibrosis.
