David Ortiz was transported from the Dominican Republic to Boston on Monday to receive medical care after being shot the night before in his native country.

Ortiz was shot in the lower right back while enjoying an evening at Dial Bar in Santo Domingo, security footage showed. The bullet entered his lower back and exited through his abdomen. He was initially reported to have been shot in the leg in a robbery attempt, but both pieces of information were later proven to be incorrect.
Ortiz was taken for medical treatment and underwent surgery. He was reported to have sustained damage to his liver and intestines and had to have his gallbladder removed.
Red Sox president Sam Kennedy told reporters on Monday that Ortiz’s condition was still serious.
