Derek Jeter wants to be an owner, will gauge interest after season
Derek Jeter is focusing on his final season as a baseball player, but he already has plans for what he wants to do when he’s done playing.
Jeter has long expressed interest in owning an MLB team and reiterated that that is one of his goals.
“That’s the next goal, buddy,” Jeter said at his 18th annual Turn 2 Foundation dinner at the Sheraton in Midtown Sunday night via the NY Post. “Calling the shots, not answering to someone, that’s what interests me.
“I’d like to think I would be good one.”
Jeter told The Post he learned a lot from former Yankees owner George Steinbrenner but would probably a little more behind-the-scenes than “The Boss.” He also says he plans to reach out to gauge interest in him buying into a team after the season.
This all makes sense. Jeter is well respected throughout the game and likes being in control. Being an owner would allow him that ability.
During his career, Jeter has earned around $265 million, which is only a fraction of what an MLB team costs. Once you figure in spending, taxes and everything else, plus add in some of Jeter’s endorsement dollars, the most likely scenario is for him to become a minority owner of some franchise.
