Doctors expect David Ortiz to make a full recovery
David Ortiz arrived in Boston from the Dominican Republic on Monday night and was examined extensively by doctors, and the former Red Sox star and his family were given good news.
Ortiz’s spokesperson Leo Lopez told ESPN’s Marly Rivera on Tuesday that Big Papi underwent “exploratory surgery” at Mass General, and doctors declared him to be in stable condition. They also expect the 43-year-old to make a full recovery.
Correction: I just spoke to David Ortiz’s spokesperson, Leo López*, here’s the latest: Ortiz underwent an “exploratory” surgery upon arriving at Mass General last night, which lasted until about 1am, and was declared in stable condition. He’s currently still in intensive care…

Ortiz is expected to be closely monitored for the next 24-48 hours. Visits will be very limited during that period. Doctors have said that they expect a full recovery. Ortiz has also been alert and has talked to his family and “even flashed that smile.” -That’s the latest update. https://t.co/jvcNun21Mh

Ortiz was shot in the lower right back while enjoying an evening at a bar in his hometown of Santo Domingo. The bullet entered through his back and exited his stomach, and he sustained injuries to his intestines and liver. He underwent extensive surgery in the Dominican Republic before being transported to Boston, where a police escort led him to Mass General for further treatment.
Given the circumstances, Ortiz is fortunate to be alive. It’s tremendous news that doctors expect him to make a full recovery.
