In a span of about two years, Yasiel Puig has gone from one of the most promising young prospects in baseball to a player no MLB team wants.
According to Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Dodgers have been “trying to give away” Puig but are not having any luck. Puig was sent to Triple-A Oklahoma City earlier this month, and one team official told Cafardo he is hoping the 25-year-old matures at some point.
“At some point, the talent, the maturity is going to take hold,” the official said. “Someone will benefit from it. We hope it’s us, but it’s hard to envision it right now.”
Puig is hitting over .400 in Triple-A, which is no surprise. Everyone can see he has MLB talent, it’s just a matter of remaining focused. All that said, he is owed only $14 million over the next two years. He’s a bargain in many ways from a talent standpoint.
It’s hard to imagine teams won’t take Puig if the Dodgers are really trying to “give him away.” Perhaps they are trying to get something in return. They’ll probably have more luck during the offseason when teams are more willing to risk putting up with a potential nuisance. The last thing a contender needs to do is bring in a toxic player.
