Fan arrested for jumping into Yankees’ bullpen because she wanted to meet team
A fan was desperate to meet some members of the New York Yankees’ pitching staff during the team’s game in Cleveland on Friday, and unfortunately she was successful in setting herself up with a private meet and greet.
According to George A. King III of the New York Post, a woman has been arrested after she made a 10-foot jump into the visitor’s bullpen at Progressive Field during the Yankees’ 5-2 loss to the Indians on Friday. The security detail was supposedly watching the final inning of the game and missed what was happening, and bullpen coach Mike Harkey pointed it out. Reliever Zack Britton said the woman shook everyone’s hand except Chad Green.
“It seems funny but in reality, [if you] think about it, if somebody wanted to do something down there they could do it fairly easy,” he said.
Making matters worse for security staffers, Britton said the woman was trying to get into the bullpen for a while and finally succeeded.
“There were police officers up there, there is team security from the Indians and they didn’t see it happen until she was kind of hanging out in the bullpen,” Britton added. “She said she was a Yankee fan and she wanted to meet us. Obviously intoxicated, but impressive jumping. She said she wanted to meet everybody. That’s a weird way to do it.”
Unfortunately, these types of things happen with fans sitting so close to the players. If it makes the Indians feel any better, at least it wasn’t one of their team owners that embarrassed his or herself like we saw at an NBA Finals game this week. Still, their security will likely be on much higher alert going forward.
