Giancarlo Stanton may be done for the year after suffering a new injury

Giancarlo Stanton may have officially played his final game for the New York Yankees.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced the unfortunate news on Saturday that the former All-Star slugger Stanton recently suffered a “moderate” strain to his other calf, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. Stanton was said to have fallen down while running and could now potentially be out for the remainder of the year.

The five-time MLB All-Star Stanton has been sidelined since late April with a strain to his right calf and had slowly been ramping up for a return to the lineup (though he also had some setbacks with that injury in recent months). But now Stanton is right back to square one after suffering a strain to his left calf while rehabbing the original injury.

Stanton’s season is likely finished after just 24 total games for the Yankees over which he hit .256 with three home runs and 14 RBIs. He was also riddled by injuries in 2025 (among other years), appearing in only 77 games due to issues with both of his elbows.

Set to turn 37 years old in November, the question now turns to Stanton’s overall MLB future. He is entering his final guaranteed year under contract in 2027 at $15 million (though he also has a $15 million club option in 2028).

As such, there is a possibility that the Yankees could seek to part ways with Stanton either by trading or by releasing him and eating his remaining salary. It also may help their cause that the Miami Marlins, who traded Stanton to the Yankees before the 2018 season, are still on the hook to pay off a small portion of Stanton’s salary.
