James Shields fires back at Ron Fowler: ‘I worked my butt off’
James Shields heard Ron Fowler’s comments about him, and he’s not happy about it.
The San Diego Padres co-owner questioned the high-priced players that weren’t performing, and Shields, since traded to the White Sox, shot back at his former boss.
“One thing I do know is, I hope he’s not putting me in that category as far as not trying,” Shields said of Fowler, via Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago. “You can ask anybody around the league, let alone in the San Diego organization — I worked my butt off every single day. I prepared myself the way I needed to prepare myself on a daily basis. And I pour my heart out every time I pitch on the mound.”
It’s not even the first time Fowler attacked Shields, having previously dubbed him an embarrassment. I don’t blame Shields one bit for feeling the need to fire back. The pitcher has often been praised for his competitive pedigree. Perhaps Fowler should stop deflecting blame for giving big money to players who came with a multitude of red flags when the Padres acquired them.
