Mets could sign another former Yankees standout?
The New York Mets may be trying for some more Al Leiter energy.
Mark W. Sanchez of the New York Post reports this week that the Mets are showing interest in Gio Urshela as a possible option at third base. Urshela remains a free agent after spending last season with the Los Angeles Angels.
The 32-year-old Urshela was once one of the top hitters for the rival New York Yankees. He batted .314 with 21 total home runs and 74 RBIs for the Yankees in 2019 and continued his hot hitting in 2023 when he batted .299 for the Angels (though his season ended early due to an unfortunate injury).
Urshela does a fantastic job of getting on base and can also play a variety of positions defensively, opening up added flexibility for teams lineup-wise. While the Mets already have young Brett Baty and newly-signed veteran Joey Wendle as options at third base, Urshela could add more steady production at the position. He would also become the second former Yankees standout the Mets have added this offseason.
