Nick Castellanos had words for fan after Phillies loss

Things got heated between Nick Castellanos and a fan following a Philadelphia Phillies loss to the Cincinnati Reds on the Fourth of July.

After second baseman Bryson Stott fouled out to end the game, Castellanos and the fan began jawing at each other near the dugout. The exchange grew increasingly heated with Castellanos signalling for the fan to leave.

It was initially unclear what sparked the exchange, but another fan who was present during the jawing sought to add clarity on Friday night.

“I was right there,” the fan, Jace Kaleikau, wrote on X. “One drunk fan came down by the dugout and was screaming at Stott for getting the last out. Nick was simply standing up for his teammate. If there ever was a time where a fan went too far that warranted a response from a player, this was it.”

In a separate post, Kaleikau said the fan “crossed multiple lines” and Castellanos was well within his right to bark back.

Castellanos was likely already frustrated by the loss after going 0-1 with RISP, hitting into an RBI fielder’s choice, especially with the New York Mets winning and climbing within a half-game of the NL East lead. A drunken rant from a fan simply tipped him over the edge.

Baseball is a game of emotion, and the fan wanted a little smoke. Castellanos was happy to oblige.
