Padres had the most absurd 8th inning vs. Royals

Padres centerfielder Jackson Merrill looking to the heavens

The San Diego Padres put on a hitting clinic in the penultimate inning of their Friday clash against the Kansas City Royals.

The Padres outlasted the Royals in an 11-8 offensive exhibition at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.

San Diego did most of their damage in the 8th inning of the contest. The Padres, who entered the inning down 3-2, tacked on nine runs without needing a single home run.

Instead, they utilized the power of the single. The Padres recorded a total of 11 hits in the 8th — the most in a single inning in franchise history.

The Padres started the inning with seven straight singles. 2-time batting champ Luis Arraez unsurprisingly got the hit parade started. The single streak didn’t end until Padres catcher Luis Campusano struck out. He was the lone Padres batter not to get a hit in the inning.

Arraez, Jurickson Profar, and Jake Cronenworth each tacked on two hits in the 8th.

Cronenworth bucked the trend with his second hit by connecting on a run-scoring double, which became their lone extra-base hit of the inning. Manny Machado mercifully lined out to end the 8th one batter later.

The Royals tried to recreate the Padres’ magic in the bottom of the 9th. They scored five runs and even got the tying run at the plate thanks to seven different players recording hits in the inning. But Kansas City ended up just a few singles short of a comeback.
