Pedro Martinez goes off on ‘horrible’ Angel Hernandez

Pedro Martinez poured it on Angel Hernandez after Game 3 of the ALDS between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.

Hernandez had three calls at first base overturned during the Red Sox’s 16-1 win over the Yankees. A few of the plays were extremely close, but one he missed badly, and it still isn’t a good sign that he was on the wrong side for so many of the close plays.

After the game, Martinez took a few jabs at Hernandez during TBS’ postgame show.

“Oh, Angel is horrible. Don’t get me going on Angel now. Major League Baseball needs to do something about Angel. It doesn’t matter how many times he sues Major League Baseball. He’s as bad as there is,” said Martinez.

Hernandez has been an MLB umpire since 1991, so Martinez experienced him during his entire playing career. He knows how long Hernandez has been making bad calls. Everyone seems to have complained about Hernandez’s bad calls over the years.

MLB issued a statement after the game, only saying they were happy replay was available to get the calls right.

Angel Hernandez declined to talk postgame. MLB issued a statement through a spokesman:

“There were several very close calls at first base tonight, and we are glad that instant replay allowed the umpiring crew to achieve the proper result on all of them.”
