Two men arrived on a motorcycle by the Dial Bar in Santo Domingo East Sunday night. Video showed one approach Ortiz from behind and shoot the Boston Red Sox legend, who had his back to the street as he enjoyed an evening out with friends. Ortiz was shot in the lower right back and the bullet exited through his abdomen.
One of the two men was captured by others in the area and beat up. He was held and then turned over to police. That man, Eddy Feliz Garcia, had tried to escape via the motorcycle. He is awaiting charges as an accomplice in an attempted murder case.
A second arrest has been made in connection with the case. It is unclear whether the above pictured alleged shooter is the man who was arrested.
Ortiz, 43, had his gallbladder removed and suffered liver and intestinal damage. He was transferred from the Dominican Republic to Mass General Hospital in Boston on Monday, where he is currently receiving treatment.
The former 10-time All-Star and three-time World Series champion is a native of the Dominican Republic and spends part of the year in his home country. He is also a U.S. citizen and has a home in Massachusetts.
