Red Sox fan miraculously catches foul ball using his food

One MLB fan didn’t need to bring a glove to the ballpark on Thursday … because he all he needed was a bun.

A fan at Fenway Park pulled off an astounding feat during Thursday’s divisional game between the Boston Red Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays. Sitting down the first-base line, the fan ended up with a foul ball off the bat of Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette. The fan, clad in a Red Sox hoodie, wasn’t even trying to catch the ball though. Instead, his food caught it for him.

Here is the video of the ridiculous moment (culminating with the fan holding up his dinner triumphantly, baseball wedged neatly inside).

It is unclear what exactly the fan was eating there. But based on the enormous size of that bun, that mostly likely had to have been a lobster roll or a crab roll. Presumably, the mayonnaise coating also had to have helped there in terms of providing the stickiness necessary to secure that baseball.

The Red Sox would go on to defeat the Blue Jays 4-3 in extra innings (as Boston shortstop Trevor Story won the game on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the 12th). Thus, that Red Sox fan ended up with both a victory and a souvenir (even if he was probably out a good amount of money because of the ruined meal).

When it comes to foul balls, we have seen fans try many different creative tactics over the years to snag them (to varying degrees of success). But a foul ball caught using only one’s food is a groundbreaking triumph that will be studied by future generations to come.
