Robinson Cano expected to miss several weeks with torn hamstring

Robinson Cano

Robinson Cano underwent an MRI on Monday that showed he has a torn hamstring.

The New York Mets second baseman suffered an injury during Sunday’s game and exited with what the team termed a strain. Further testing revealed a more severe injury. Though no timetable has been given for Cano’s absence, Mets reporter Anthony DiComo says the injury will keep the second baseman out weeks.

Cano was acquired by the Mets over the offseason along with closer Edwin Diaz as part of a big trade with the Mariners. The Mets shipped out Jay Bruce’s contract to Seattle, along with top prospect Jared Kelenic. Many considered it a bad trade because Cano, 36, is owed $24 million per season through 2023.

Cano was batting .252/.295/.415 this season with 10 home runs in 346 plate appearances. He had four straight multi-hit games prior to his injury and has been a part of the Mets’ recent hot streak. Jeff McNeil will likely take his spot at second base moving forward.
