Yan Gomes injures shoulder day after sacrifice to Jobu (Video)

In an attempt to break out of a season-long slump, the Cleveland Indians sacrificed a chicken to Jobu on behalf of catcher Yan Gomes on Saturday. On Sunday, it became apparent that Jobu did not appreciate that sacrifice.

As we told you Saturday, the .163-hitting Gomes sacrificed a fast food chicken to Jobu in the hopes of turning his season around (video here). It didn’t work Saturday, but on Sunday, the baseball gods seemed to respond, as Gomes was able to come up with a fluky double off the leg of Minnesota pitcher Kyle Gibson.

Gomes’s favor in the eyes of Jobu was short lived, however. In the fifth inning, he appeared to trip over first base running out a grounder and fell heavily on his right shoulder.

Gomes said after the game he feared a separated shoulder, and backup catcher Chris Gimenez couldn’t help but crack about the ritual.

The Indians have been leaning on Jobu for a few weeks now. It might be time to stop. He no longer seems to appreciate their tributes, and who knows what horrors could await the Tribe if they persist.
