Yankees fans cheering about Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani's injury

Some New York Yankees fans trended on social media Saturday for their reaction to Shohei Ohtani’s injury suffered in Game 2 of the World Series.

The Dodgers led the Yankees 4-1 in the bottom of the 7th inning at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif. Ohtani was on first base with two outs as Teoscar Hernandez came up to the plate against Yankees reliever Clay Holmes.

As Hernandez took a first-pitch strike, Ohtani tried to steal second base. But the prolific Dodgers base-stealer was thrown out to end the inning. Ohtani was slow to get up after suffering a shoulder injury during his slide (video here).

A video of a Yankees watch party went viral on X. As the venue’s screen showed Ohtani on the ground, fans in attendance reacted with a mix of boos, cheers, and fist pumps.

The Yankees tried to mount a late comeback in the top of the 9th inning. Trailing 4-2, the Yanks loaded the bases with just one out. But an Alex Volpe strikeout and Jose Trevino flyout secured the victory and gave the Dodgers a 2-0 lead in best-of-7 series.

All eyes will be on Ohtani and his availability ahead of Monday’s Game 3 in New York.
