The Cleveland Cavaliers are looking to do some summer cleaning.
Cleveland is actively discussing various trade packages involving veteran guard Dennis Schroder, Chris Fedor of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported this weekend. Fedor adds that the Cavs are eyeing the opportunity to gain financial flexibility to potentially help their respective pursuits of free agents Jonathan Kuminga and Peyton Watson.
Schroder, who turns 33 next month, was acquired by Cleveland at last season’s trade deadline. He proceeded to post unimpressive regular season averages of 8.2 points and 4.3 assists per game on 40/29/86 shooting splits in a Cavs uniform.
The former first-round pick Schroder was even worse in the playoffs. He only managed 5.5 points and 2.4 assists per game for Cleveland and largely did more flopping than actual contributing.
Unfortunately for the Cavs though, Schroder is still signed for $14.8 million next season and $15.5 million in 2027-28. That might explain why the team is desperate to try to shed Schroder’s contract as soon as possible.
We had already heard for months now that Cleveland was looking to move Schroder this offseason. With high-upside free agents like Kuminga and Watson still on the board, and former MVP James Harden still yet to officially re-sign with the Cavs, their urgency to dump Schroder may only be increasing.
