Chicago Sky star out for season with torn ACL suffered vs. Fever

The bad news just keeps on coming for the Chicago Sky.

The Sky announced on Sunday that veteran guard Courtney Vandersloot has been diagnosed with a torn ACL in her right knee. As a result, Vandersloot will be out for the remainder of the 2025 season.

Vandersloot suffered the injury during Chicago’s blowout loss to the Indiana Fever on Saturday. In the first quarter of the game at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill., Vandersloot was driving to the basket and planted awkwardly on her right leg. She immediately collapsed to the floor in pain and had to leave the game, which the Sky would eventually lose 79-52.

Prayers up for Vandersloot. She went down during this drive, looks like non contact knee injury. #WNBA pic.twitter.com/NooOR1QT8D

A five-time WNBA All-Star and seven-time league assists leader, Vandersloot is one of the greatest players in Sky history. She was a Chicago draft pick back in 2011 and helped lead the team to their only WNBA championship to date in 2021.

Vandersloot would eventually leave the Sky to sign with the New York Liberty in 2023. But after winning another title with the Liberty in 2024, Vandersloot returned to Chicago as a free agent this past offseason.

But after now having torn her ACL at 36 years old, the 15-season veteran Vandersloot’s career could be in danger. That is yet another tough blow for the Sky, who are now 2-5 on the early season and have also sparked controversy lately with their stance on the national anthem. Vandersloot’s injury now leaves Angel Reese as the only healthy All-Star on the Chicago roster (though Reese is having some real on-court struggles of her own right now).
