Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick had no sympathy for any fans or reporters who actually thought LeBron James was hanging up his sneakers.
King James turned heads on Monday when he released a teaser for what was called “The Second Decision” on his social media platforms. The format looked like a modern-day recreation of his infamous 2010 “Decision” segment on ESPN, which served as his platform to announce his decision to sign with the Miami Heat.
Some fans wondered whether LeBron was about to announce his retirement at the end of the season. Tickets for the Lakers’ final game of the season immediately spiked more than 500% in price following the release of the 10-second clip. The entire thing turned out to be an elaborate advertisement for the cognac brand Hennessy.
On Tuesday, reporters asked Redick if he was receiving texts from people inquiring about James’ retirement plans. The Lakers head coach could not believe anyone actually bought the “Second Decision” as anything but an endorsement deal.
“You guys are idiots,” Redick told reporters. “We all knew it was an ad, right? … I think most people that texted me [about LeBron’s ‘Second Decision’] are also aware that it was probably an ad. Nobody was freaking out.”

Most fans were able to sniff out James’ post as a precursor to a paid advertisement. Internet sleuths just had the wrong guess regarding which billion-dollar brand was behind it.
James is entering an unprecedented 23rd season in the NBA, which has many of his supporters on edge about when he’ll finally decide to retire. It doesn’t help that James continues to tease fans about his retirement whenever he has the chance.
