All options are on the table for the 32-42 New York Knicks as they look to improve their team this summer … all options except for one, that is.
Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer reported this week that the Knicks do not have any interest in acquiring Los Angeles Lakers guard Russell Westbrook in the offseason. Fischer adds that the Knicks’ lack of interest in the former MVP has been apparent since the February trade deadline.
The Knicks, who will not even make the play-in tournament in the Eastern Conference this year, are in need of a power surge. But the cost of acquiring Westbrook, who will make $47.1 million next season just by picking up his player option, is way too prohibitive. As a core piece, Westbrook would also keep the Knicks in perpetual mediocrity. He is too productive for a tanking team but is not productive enough to help a contending team.
The Knicks’ lack of interest in trading for Westbrook is likely a preview of what is to come for the 33-year-old’s market this summer. As for what the Knicks might do instead, they appear to have their eyes on another star.
