Lou Williams takes funny shot at himself over poor defensive reputation

Lou Williams

Lou Williams knows what the primary knock on his game is, and he is more than willing to laugh about it.

The LA Clippers guard posted a graphic to Instagram on Thursday showing he was tied for the record in single-game steals (ten) among active NBA players. Williams poked fun at himself in the caption by writing, “Yea I know what you’re thinking. How the hell does Lou Williams have a record for defense?”

Indeed, the three-time Sixth Man of the Year Williams has a very strong reputation as a scorer but a very poor one as a defender. Opposing teams regularly hunt him on defense, and some question whether he should even close games for the Clippers with his shortcomings on that end of the floor.

That said, Williams’ ten-steal game was actually not all that long ago as he recorded it in Jan. 2018 against Utah (per Basketball Reference). The 33-year-old recently said he has many more quality years left to offer, so maybe we can look forward to Williams surprising us on defense for a long time to come.
