Malik Beasley is under investigation by the NBA

Malik Beasley is no longer considered a target in an ongoing federal probe related to NBA gambling activity, but the free-agent sharpshooter is still being investigated by the league.

The NBA confirmed to ESPN’s David Purdum on Wednesday that officials are looking into allegations of improper gambling on NBA games and prop bets from the 2023-24 season. Beasley was with the Milwaukee Bucks at the time.

Beasley’s attorney, Steve Haney, said the 28-year-old is fully cooperating with the NBA’s investigation.

ESPN reported in June that Beasley was under investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. On Aug. 22, Beasley’s attorneys said they were informed by officials that Beasley is not considered a target of the investigation. That does not necessarily mean he will not face charges or has been cleared of any wrongdoing, however.

The investigation reportedly stems — at least in part — from unusual betting activity on a Jan. 31, 2024 game between the Portland Trail Blazers and Bucks. The odds on Beasley to record fewer than 2.5 rebounds in that game shifted significantly before tip-off. Beasley finished with six rebounds.

Beasley has expressed frustration over people “saying some crazy things in the media” and said he is more motivated than ever to “destroy” the competition. He posted a four-word message on social media earlier this week that led to speculation he could soon sign with a new team.

Beasley played in all 82 games for the Detroit Pistons last season and averaged 16.3 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists. There was a report that Beasley and the Pistons were close to agreement on a new 3-year, $42 million contract but broke off talks because of the gambling probe.

There are several teams that have reportedly expressed interest in Beasley since word surfaced that he is no longer a target of the federal investigation. However, it is possible that teams will want more clarity from the NBA before making a commitment.
