Mike Woodson has landed a new coaching job.
Woodson will be the associate head coach for the Sacramento Kings. He is the first hire made by Doug Christie, who last week was named the head coach for the Western Conference team. The Kings cleaned house and got rid of most of the coaches who were part of previous coach Mike Brown’s staff. Leandro Barbosa was retained, and now Woodson has been added.
Woodson has plenty of experience at both the professional and college levels.
The 67-year-old played at Indiana in college under Bob Knight. He began a coaching career after his professional playing career ended. Woodson has had seven different stints as an NBA assistant, which will make this his eighth. He has served as a head coach for the Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks, and in college at Indiana.
As a head coach, Woodson’s NBA teams made the playoffs five out of nine seasons. At Indiana, Woodson helped lead the Hoosiers to the NCAA Tournament two out of four years.
The Kings are coming off a 40-42 season that saw them miss the playoffs. They fired Brown after a 13-18 start and went 27-24 under Christie.
