Russell Westbrook has a potential landing spot in NBA free agency, but like a number of other moves, it is contingent on what LeBron James does.
The Miami Heat have been named as a potential landing spot for Westbrook, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post. That move would only be possible, however, if James does not return to Miami.
Westbrook is the sort of low-cost veteran that makes a lot of sense for the Heat. He averaged 15.2 points and 6.7 assists per game for the Sacramento Kings last season and can still contribute to a team, especially one with designs on winning a championship.
The Heat’s interest being contingent on James’ status is probably not down to just money. Westbrook and James had an infamously tense relationship when they played for the Los Angeles Lakers together. Westbrook, at the very least, probably isn’t all that interested in teaming up with James again, be it in Miami or somewhere else.
Miami is eyeing a number of veterans that could add some scoring punch alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo. Westbrook is not the player he once was, but they clearly believe the 37-year-old still has something to offer.
