Steve Nash is back in very familiar territory.

Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia announced over social media on Monday that the Basketball Hall of Famer Nash is returning to their team. The Suns are bringing back Nash to serve as a senior advisor in their front office.

“Steve Nash was an amazing player and exactly what the Phoenix Suns are all about,” Ishbia wrote on X. “His grit, toughness, and winning mentality have defined our organization in the past, and I’m so excited to share that Steve is formally joining the @Suns as a senior advisor and will help us define our future for years to come!”

Nash, now 51 years old, is obviously a very well-known and beloved figure in Phoenix. He was originally drafted by the Suns in 1996 and spent the first two years of his pro career there before being traded to the Dallas Mavericks. Nash then returned to Phoenix as a free agent in 2004 and served as the engine of the Suns’ famous “seven seconds or less” offense under then-coach Mike D’Antoni. He won two NBA MVPs (in 2005 and 2006) during his second stint in Phoenix and led the league in assists five different times. After leaving the Suns in 2012, Nash retired as a player in 2015 and had his No. 13 jersey retired by the Suns later that same year too.

After his retirement, Nash did some consulting work (most notably with the Golden State Warriors) and then went into coaching. He served as the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets from 2020-22, going 94-67 (.584) but producing just one playoff series victory before getting fired. Nash would later explain what went wrong with the Nets, an era best remembered for the unsuccessful Kevin Durant-Kyrie Irving-James Harden experiment.

With some subsequent podcasting work now under his belt as well (including with LeBron James on the popular “Mind The Game” podcast), Nash is returning to the league as a senior advisor for his old NBA team, the Suns. Ishbia’s tenure as Phoenix’s owner has largely been characterized by him hiring his old buddies, but Suns fans probably won’t be complaining here about the team’s reunion with the beloved Nash.
