Suns GM open to trading No. 1 overall draft pick

The Phoenix Suns landed the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft when they won the draft lottery on Tuesday. Though holding the top pick could lead to them selecting a franchise-changing player, there’s no guarantee they keep that pick.

Suns GM Ryan McDonough said on Friday that his Suns are “certainly open” to trading the top pick.

“We’re certainly open to that. We’ll consider it,” McDonough said on ESPN’s coverage of the draft combine. “Obviously, we’ll have more information closer to the draft than we do today, after we go through the workout process and the interview process and we get the medical physicals. So we’re open to that.”

The draft is loaded with talent, so Phoenix could trade down and conceivably end up with a very talented player. And it’s not like trades of the No. 1 pick never happen; Boston and Philly swung a deal for it last year.

Deandre Ayton, Marvin Bagley III and Michael Porter Jr are among the top prospects. But Phoenix may specfically have their eye on a European player.
