Terry Rozier betting scandal takes another twist

Despite recent reports to the contrary, Terry Rozier may not be out of the woods just yet with his betting scandal.

The Miami Heat guard Rozier has not been cleared of any wrongdoing at this point, veteran NBA writer Chris Haynes reported Tuesday. Rozier remains under federal investigation on a potential gambling probe, Haynes adds.

This runs counter to a report from a couple of weeks ago by Shams Charania of ESPN. Charania reported that Rozier had essentially been cleared following a federal investigation.

Rozier, the 31-year-old former first-round draft pick, was first reported back in January to be under investigation by federal officials in connection with a possible sports betting scheme during the 2022-23 NBA season. The supposed scheme had a potential link to the illegal betting ring associated with Jontay Porter. The former Toronto Raptors forward Porter was banned for life from the NBA and is currently awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud (a federal felony) in connection with the illegal betting ring.

The NBA said in a statement when the Rozier scandal first broke in January that they had not found any violation of league rules after their own independent investigation. However, fans on social media pinpointed supposed game evidence that made Rozier look suspicious.

Rozier, who averaged an underwhelming 10.6 points per game on 39/30/85 shooting splits last season, is still under contract with the Heat for $26.6 million next season. But his NBA future looks extremely uncertain at this point, especially given the broad scope of the investigation (which has apparently even included multiple college basketball programs).
