WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert is not taking all the attacks and criticism of her without a response.

Engelbert issued a statement this week in response to scathing criticism she received from Napheesa Collier. Collier, who plays for the Minnesota Lynx, targeted Engelbert in comments made to the media after her team was eliminated from the WNBA playoffs this year.

Collier claimed that the WNBA had the “worst leadership in the world” and exposed comments Engelbert suposedly made to her in private.

“I have the utmost respect for Napheesa Collier and for all the players in the WNBA,” Engelbert said in a statement shared with Larry Brown Sports. “Together we have all worked tirelessly to transform this league. My focus remains on ensuring a bright future for the players and the WNBA, including collaborating on how we continue to elevate the game. I am disheartened by how Napheesa characterized our conversations and league leadership, but even when our perspectives differ, my commitment to the players and to this work will not waver.”

The WNBA also shared many of the accomplishments that have occurred since Engelbert took over in 2019. Those accomplishments include raises for players thanks to a new CBA in 2020; the implementation of league-wide charter flights in 2024, which is accompanied by better hotel accomodation; the expansion of the league by six teams; and a new media rights deal. The league has also seen growth in viewership and attendance, though most of that is attributed to Caitlin Clark joining the league.

The league is still unprofitable overall, and all teams operate at a loss. The players don’t seem to realize that — or they ignore it — when they issue many of their public complaints.
