Floyd Mayweather Jr. says he and Shantel Jackson are still engaged despite reports saying they broke up.
Mayweather is on a post-fight publicity tour since beating Canelo Alvarez on Sept. 14. The undefeated boxer joined Howard Stern Wednesday for a lengthy interview. Stern really did a great job covering many of the pertinent issues concerning Floyd, and of course he had to ask Floyd about his love life.
Stern started off by saying he heard Mayweather was engaged but broke up. Mayweather denied that.
“No, no, no. I mean that’s just the media,” Mayweather said of the breakup reports. “Yeah, we still engaged. She’s my better half. Miss Jackson. She’s cool, she’s just my better half.”
Stern asked about their plans to get married, and Floyd said it wasn’t a high priority.
“We’re not really focused on marriage right now. I’m going to focus on taking her career to that next level. It’s about me being an asset, helping my better half,” said Mayweather, indicating the relationship is a lot about business.
“We just prefer to talk our time. Eventually it’s going to happen, but not right now because I’m very, very busy and I’m focused on my career and my contract. I feel like if it’s not broke, why try to add on, try to fix it?”
After Mayweather told Stern he was still engaged and planned to marry Miss Jackson, Stern asked about the strip clubs and all the other women in Floyd’s life. Mayweather said Shantel goes to strip clubs with him, but he clarified he goes to respectable topless-only gentleman’s clubs, not trashy, fully-nude strip clubs (there is a difference!). Floyd says he goes to the strip clubs to talk crap to the women. He also says he doesn’t mess with the strippers sexually, and that if he does get oral sex from a woman, it’s with a condom on.
Regardless of what Floyd says, there was a lot of substance to the rumors that Floyd and Shantel broke up. We posted about that in August, noting that Floyd appeared to be selling off some of the material goods he bought Shantel. It also looked like Floyd had replaced her with another woman from The Money Team. Miss Jackson even seemed to confirm she and Floyd had been having problems, though she did attend his most recent fight.
I’m guessing Floyd and Miss Jackson did have a tough time and brief breakup. The evidence all seemed to be there. But Floyd strikes me as the kind of person who always gets his way. If he wants you in his life, there’s probably no way to escape. That’s probably what’s going on with him and Shantel. If you asked her what happened, I’m guessing you’d hear a different explanation.
