Errol Spence Jr. is calling it a career after a 14-year run inside the professional boxing ring.

Spence Jr. (28-2-0) lost to Australian fighter Tim Tszyu (28-3-0) via unanimous decision at Afterpay Arena in Sydney, Australia. The 36-year-old American only won a few rounds, with the judges scoring the fight 118-110, 117-111, and 117-111.

The fight was Spence’s first since losing in even more one-sided fashion to Terrence Crawford three years ago, almost to the day. After suffering his only two career losses in back-to-back bouts, Spence revealed during his post-fight interview that it was “time to go home.”

“I answered a lot of questions for myself,” Spence said, via Kerr Ferguson of Boxing News. “Now it’s time to go home with my family and start a new life.”

When asked to confirm whether he was announcing his retirement, Spence made it clear that he was done.

“Yeah, for sure, man. I got my faculties intact. My money is good, it’s working for itself. Everything’s good, man. I got a beautiful family. I thank God that I’m leaving this sport with my faculties intact and my family still by my side. Everything’s gonna go well … This has been a great journey for myself – it’s time to live family life.”

Spence got a huge round of applause from a respectful Australian crowd who, after rooting against the American for 12 rounds, ended up witnessing his final fight (barring a future cash grab against Jake Paul in 2030).

The Dallas area native won three of the four major welterweight belts on his way to becoming one of the most successful American fighters of his generation.

After his rival Terrence Crawford retired last year, Spence has now done the same.
