Victor Ortiz called ‘culero’ by fans after knockout loss to Andre Berto

Andre Berto

Carson, Calif. — Andre Berto won the rematch with Victor Ortiz Saturday night at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. via fourth-round knockout, and the pro-Ortiz fans turned on their fighter.

Berto caught Ortiz with an uppercut the Kansas native did not see coming, and he got floored. It was his second time going down in the fourth, but this time he barely beat the 10-count before referee Jack Reiss stopped it.

The fight, a rematch of 2011’s fight of the year won by Ortiz via unanimous decision, was not completely one-sided. Ortiz recorded a knockdown in the second, but Berto came through with the knockout two rounds later.

After the fight, Ortiz had some smiles on his face and said he planned to take some time off.

“I just need to go and take a vacation. I haven’t had a vacation in two years, and then I will get back at it,” said Ortiz.

Though the fans had cheered him loudly before the fight, he was heavily booed when he jumped on the ropes after his defeat.

Fans even began calling him “culero,” which means A-hole in Spanish.

There was a fracas in the crowd as Berto and Ortiz cleared out, with fans angry over Ortiz’s performance throwing debris at him.
