Williams played for seven different teams during his NBA career, and he was named an All-Star with the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2008-09 season. He last played in the NBA in 2016, returning to the Cavs and helping them win an NBA title.
“Mo Williams checked the boxes that we were looking for in the next head coach of Alabama State men’s basketball, and his passion and leadership speak volumes,” Alabama State athletic director Jennifer Lynne Williams said in a statement.
Williams has deep ties to the state of Alabama, as he played at the University of Alabama and was named SEC Freshman of the Year in 2002.
Alabama State has not made the NCAA Tournament since 2011. They went 8-24 this season.
