The Virginia Cavaliers proved Friday that nothing can ever be taken for granted in the NCAA Tournament. That is, unless you’re Roy Williams coaching in the first round.
The North Carolina coach admitted that watching the Cavaliers fall in the first round stunned him — and made him even prouder of his 28-0 record in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament over his career.
UNC's Roy Williams: That [UMBC win] was unbelievable. Last night I said, "I'm going back to my room and watching A&M/Providence…there's no way that is going to happen." I try not to get caught up in records but being 28-0 in the first round is something I'm proud of.

Frankly, Williams has reason to be proud. His record is unprecedented given how many games he’s coached and how often he’s been the favorite. Sure, he has plenty of other things to worry about, but he can crow about that one, especially after what happened to several other favorites.
