Baker Mayfield tends to relish speaking with the media and interacting with critics. So it was surprising that he was not in attendance for a media event on Friday. The Oklahoma quarterback has missed three straight events surrounding the Rose Bowl, all due to illness.
On Wednesday, the Heisman Trophy winner did not go to Disneyland. He missed the traditional “Beef Bowl” at Lawry’s restaurant on Thursday, and then he missed media availability on Friday.
Although he has not been present for these events, Mayfield has been practicing with his team all week, so there shouldn’t be too many concerns about his status for the playoff game on New Year’s Day.
“Baker will be good to go,” Oklahoma tight end Mark Andrews said via Yahoo’s Pete Thamel. “He’s not dying or anything.”
Oklahoma faces Georgia in the College Football Playoff on Monday. The winner faces the winner of the Clemson-Alabama game for the national championship.
